Here i will list my favorite artists of all-time. This list takes into account an artist's entire catalogue, giving highest marks to quality across quantity. (I will list my fav album by each artist.) This list is subjective not really based on BEA-entered data.
Runners up: the minus 5, fun/the_format, iron & wine, of montreal, sheryl crow, gram parsons, the bee gees. You can probably find a bunch of these artists on the continuation of this chart, "all-time fav artists (subj), #101-200".
03/13/2018 UPDATE: I need to revisit this (and the continuation) chart as it hasn't been updated since after 2013. However, if there are any changes, they'd most likely be subtle.

If you've seen my overall albums top 100, then you could've already guessed Genesis was my favorite of all-time. Their career spans really intricate, musically-talented prog-rock pieces in the 70s, what i call their transition of autumnal, pastoral pop-rock between decades, into the 80's where they produced some of the best pop songs of that decade and all-time, and finally a retrospective phase that melded their prog and pop tendencies. They're an awesome band that i regretfully have never seen live in person. :-(

Bowie obviously has a great body of work that spans 6 decades. Sure, the 90s and 00s were a bit spotty as it seemed he chased trends more than being part of them, but he basically put out a very-good album every year of the 70s and has recently touched past greatness with his last 2 albums before his demise.

Now some would call this a cheat, but this spot is allocated to Simon and Garfunkel AND Paul Simon's solo work. He was the main visionary behind Simon and Garfunkel, so I'm combining the two. Paul Simon is a master storyteller, whether it's down a folk alleyway or across the globe soaking in african vibes. He's not flashy, he's just a great musician with fun and highly-relatable lyrics.

Here's another artist that seemingly put out a very-good-to-great album every year of the 70s. The 70s was a great time of creativity on rock radio and Elton John was one of the leaders. Even when his albums faltered in the 80s he still pumped out plenty of great pop tunes. I've also liked what i've heard out of his recent throwback material.

Stevie's one of those artists that seemed to put out a stellar album every year of the 70s. "Talking Book", "Fulfillingness.." and "Songs in the key of life" were just a handful of hip r&b albums he released in a stellar career.

The breadth of 80s hair metal owes its existence to Van Halen's debut album. From the precise, guitar histronics to the showboatsmanship of the lead singer to the synthesizers that helped propel 1984 and it's top single "jump" to the top of the charts, Van Halen melded hard rock with pretty boy style like no other in the 80s. They were very good under David Lee Roth, but their albums were hit-and-miss track-for-track under Sammy Hagar.

It took me a long time to warm up to Neil Young but, through his CSNY work and what i heard in the 90s, i eventually travelled back to a 70s output of riches. Combing his solo work with his time performing with Crazy Horse, Neil Young is one of the all-time best folk/rock artists.

The Eagles are one of the best 70s classic rock bands. They're earthy, introspective and melodical. Like a lot of the best bands on my list, they're comprised of talented individuals that would sport fine solo careers.

From the beginning of his career, he has been known as the piano man. Sure, he has attempted to vary the image with 50s-rock overtones and 80s rock guitar, but his commanding voice and piano talent have prevailed throughout.

One of the biggest influences on 00s/10s indie rock, the Talking Heads were the best oddball alternative act of the 70s and 80s. Their song structures were quite complex for a rock act that consistently peaked its head into pop/rock radio. David Byrne's creative vision was singular and expressive.
