Here i will list my favorite artists of all-time. This list takes into account an artist's entire catalogue, giving highest marks to quality across quantity. (I will list my fav album by each artist.) This list is subjective not really based on BEA-entered data.
Runners up: the minus 5, fun/the_format, iron & wine, of montreal, sheryl crow, gram parsons, the bee gees. You can probably find a bunch of these artists on the continuation of this chart, "all-time fav artists (subj), #101-200".
03/13/2018 UPDATE: I need to revisit this (and the continuation) chart as it hasn't been updated since after 2013. However, if there are any changes, they'd most likely be subtle.

It was a tough choice for me between Prince, Simon & Garfunkel and Radiohead. Ultimately, Radiohead was bested as a result of Prince's longevity and slightly more extensive quality discography. But Radiohead hasn't experienced the slumps Prince experienced during his hey dey ("Parade" for example), so maybe with 1 or 2 more albums, Radiohead will rise. They were the first artist i purposefully saw in concert twice.

I used to not give it much credence for those older than myself when they'd discuss beatles or floyd or something like that and they'd say "you had to be there", but I think that's the case with Nirvana. You had to be there to know that the simple lyrics and melody along with the ragged voice and miminal accompanyment really was (and is) more than the sum of its parts. Kurt sang and played from a real place which you can hear in nearly all of his work. Would the alt/grunge movement happened without Kurt/Nirvana? Probably -- someone else would've come along. But that's not what happened -- Nirvana sparked the last mainstream rock revolution. And it was a blast witnessing.

Honestly, i didn't like Pearl Jam when "Ten" came out. Most of the grunge sound, except Nirvana which i instantly loved, sounded to murky and like regular rock for me to enjoy. I slowly changed my opinion of those other grunge bands and ultimately loved Pearl Jam by the time Vitalogy came out. For a while, "No Code"'s aping of Neil Young was my favorite PJ album, but i've since moved back to Ten. If you like this kind of alt-rock, you can't go wrong from Ten through Yield.

It's true -- "Weird Al"'s career has outlasted every artist that he has parodied, except maybe Madonna's. Big stars like Queen and Jacko fall while pan-flashes like Miley Cyrus and Gerardo are quickly forgotten, and somehow "Weird Al" continues to pump out great song and style parodies.

Where would dark, gothy synth-pop be without Depeche Mode? From "people are people" to their 90s/00s albums, these guys crept up from the dark places of the psyche to haunt and rock hard for keyboard-based band. Violator was the first great 90s album, building upon the eerie morass of "music for the masses".

I credit R.E.M. with first bringing "alternative" music via college radio to the mainstream long before it had it's own genre name. Their lyrics are emotive, stipe's vocals are forthright and they've held a high level of creativity from their debut until they lost their drummer.

For a while, the Pumpkins were my 2nd fav only to Genesis. "Mellon Collie" was such a collosal rocking beast following "Siamese Dream" that it soundtracked many memories for about a year-and-a-half. And that's no surprise -- there are so many great songs it's tough to exhaust within a few months. They stumbled a bit when Chamberlain left and then fell into a bit of a mess when he returned, but I still have a big place in my mind's ear for the pumpkins despite their quick burn.

I was obsessed with pop/r&b and choreography for a while there in the early 90s. Janet put that all together masterfully with the Rhythm Nation 1814 long-form video as well as most of the Control videos. By the time she released her sexual "Janet" she softened her choreography a bit but I still loved her pop songs. After Janet, I only like about half of "velvet rope" and "all for you", but she had a great run at her peak.

Speaking of philosphical in a spiritual way, Ed Kowalcyk had a great and unique vocal quality that matched a spiritual mysticism that clouded and informed Live's music, especially between Mental Jewelry and Secret Samadhi (especially Samadhi), swinging from beautifully sad to rocking ferocity. They also enjoyed a minor resurgence with some pretty good alt-rock songs on V despite it somewhat aping the nu metal fad of the time.

This is an artist i discovered in college but didn't really immerse myself into until just after college. A friend of mine was sick of "the downward spiral" and gave me his copy. I've been a huge fan since. That album's vision and personal s&m qualities are omnipresent and shredding, carrying the vision of "pretty hate machine" to its logical, self-flatulating extreme. "the fragile" carried this vision to a grander, if a bit lengthy, scope. He then struggled for many years to regain focus until recent soundtrack work and "hesitation marks". One more strong album like that and NIN can move up.
