all-time fav artists (subj), #001-100
by
paladisiac
Here i will list my favorite artists of all-time. This list takes into account an artist's entire catalogue, giving highest marks to quality across quantity. (I will list my fav album by each artist.) This list is subjective not really based on BEA-entered data.
Runners up: the minus 5, fun/the_format, iron & wine, of montreal, sheryl crow, gram parsons, the bee gees. You can probably find a bunch of these artists on the continuation of this chart, "all-time fav artists (subj), #101-200".
03/13/2018 UPDATE: I need to revisit this (and the continuation) chart as it hasn't been updated since after 2013. However, if there are any changes, they'd most likely be subtle.

Another more-recent discovery, Hot Chip's brand of pet shop boys -harkening synthpop combines their flair for lyrical hooks with the catchiest current IDM flavor. I love everything from "The Warning" and on. With an album out seemingly every-other year, no quality of synth-hooks are lost despite the fairly-quick release schedule.

He's the best rap/hip-hop artist of all-time, IMO. His combination of production prowess, creativity, rawness, ability to spit a rap and entertainment value trumps any hip hop artist before him. I've sincerily named "My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy" the Thriller of rap. Even when he slumps (imo) he's pushing or attempting to push at the edges of what has been done in rap before. His ego may be overblown (or that's the personae he wants to display?) but it's well-deserved.

A short career? Certainly. A brilliant career? Definitely. It feels inaccurate to put lcd soundsystem so high, and i might change this ranking eventually (soon?), but those 4 albums, especially the last 2, were awesome. James's swan song, "this is happening", is near-perfect IDM. He is one of the best at what he does. (Or was, since he shut down LCD.)

It's weird that my favorite album by Paul McCartney (and Wings), an artist that's been around since the mid-60s, is the last album he put out in 2013. I've heard other albums from him, including Wings and with Linda ("Ram"), and there are parts i really like coming from his pop sensibilities; but all of his albums have seemed a little spotty, like he loses focus now'n'then. Anyway, McCartney is pop, and is again a-New.

I kind of liked them when they first started but then forgot all about them when they hit the post-"make believe" sh|tter. When they resurfaced with "everything will be alright in the end", i started noticing them again.

Cut Copy walks that middle ground between reminding me of today's club/IDM stalwarts like Daft Punk and LCD Soundsystem and the techno i grew up on, most notably Psykosonik. There's always a funky undercurrent to their digitized soundscapes that i find irresistable, especially on "zonoscope" and "in ghost colours".

Great list from top to bottom (although I did a double-take on the Richard Marx). Good comments
