Here i will list my favorite artists of all-time. This list takes into account an artist's entire catalogue, giving highest marks to quality across quantity. (I will list my fav album by each artist.) This list is subjective not really based on BEA-entered data.
Runners up: the minus 5, fun/the_format, iron & wine, of montreal, sheryl crow, gram parsons, the bee gees. You can probably find a bunch of these artists on the continuation of this chart, "all-time fav artists (subj), #101-200".
03/13/2018 UPDATE: I need to revisit this (and the continuation) chart as it hasn't been updated since after 2013. However, if there are any changes, they'd most likely be subtle.

I love Colin Meloy's highly literary sea shanties and doomed romances in any flavor -- from prog rock to rock opera to alt-country. Colin's the artist I've seen live the most (3 with decemberists and 1 solo).

They haven't been around long, but their 5 album indie emo-esque rock discography is near-perfect. They even threw out a sizable curve employing James Murphy for their last album, replete with fleet beats. Recently crowned my "current favorite artist" (perhaps i'll create another list?), Arcade fire hasn't yet stumbled, and they very well could have after the post-grammy pressure.

I guess the biggest positive and negative (for detractors) of the National's churning alt-rock sound is that they've been pretty consistent with that sound from Alligator-on. For me, i love how most songs are pretty great to begin with but then build to a heightened emotion or anxiousness that makes individual songs even better.

I came to Wilco based upon my interest in alt-country. First i heard Whiskeytown and the Jayhawks, then i heard yankee hotel foxtrot. Of course, by then they were removed from the alt-country sound, but i still loved their quirky, experimental alternative rock and the cryptic lyrics of Tweedy. Since then i've vascillated from YHF to Summerteeth back to YHF as my favorite album, but they don't have a complete dud in their catalog (although i haven't been as impressed after "a ghost is born").

This is what pure indie pop/rock sounds like. The combination of A.C. Newman, Neko Case and Dan Bejar put out some of the catchiest music on their first 3 albums. Some songs carry 2-to-3 choruses for non-stop sing-along fun. It's crazy how great of a songwriter A.C.

I'm counting his work with the Cardinals. "Heartbreaker" is breathtaking and truly heartbreaking (especially "come pick me up"). "Gold" was also a great elton john -esque follow-up. He tried on other rock skins well on "rock n roll" and rekindled some greatness on the first Cardinals album. (If i counted his work with whiskeytown, he'd be 4-or-5 places higher.)

"moon & antarctica" was the first album i loved that i was first introduced to thanks to that infamous p2p app from the turn of the millenium. Quirky, ferocious and philosophical, i ate that album up. IMO, they've been carbon-copying its approach since then on "good news" and "we were dead", but when you release such an awesome concept album of apocalyptic isolation, such self-imitation is well-served. After "good news" i worked backward and eventually loved "lonesome crowded west" as well.

The Mountain Goats, the vision of John Darnielle, best produced by John Vanderslice, have put out near-great works for a decade now. Although most of his albums are impersonal character sketches, I'm sure some of Darnielle's personal demons escape throughout hsi albums, from songs like "no children" to his last album "transcendental youth".

Another short but brilliant career to be found in Vampire Weekend. Their Paul Simon and Peter Gabriel influences are well-documented and they picked some pretty good artists to play up to and it shows in their music. I enjoy the playful wit the most and anticipate their 4th LP..

Probably my current favorite female artist. Starting in the alt-country vein but entering the pop/rock realm probably thanks to the new p0rn influence, she has slowly traded a traditional blues-country style with some indie-type of eccentricities, solidifying her awesomeness as a music artist.
