The production is very consistent from start to finish and some of the ideas on here are really interesting and work so well, such as the song "Nico And The Niners" where the instrumental is sampled and played backwards near the end of the song to finish off with quite a psychedelic rap verse. Its a very light hearted album and not to be taken too seriously so if you can deal with "white pop rap" and sometimes odd vocals I would recommend you give this a listen. Springsteen really has a bee in his bonnet, especially on the sarcastic opening track, we take care of our own, reminiscent of, born in the USA, in so much that it could easily be misunderstood as a flag waving anthem. Elsewhere, Bruce rages at the fat cat bankers on, Jack of all trades, and, does his pogues/clancy brothers bit on, death to my hometown, Irish accent and all. The title track is an excellent tribute to Yankee stadium, about to be knocked down and rebuilt, but Springsteen reminds us they can tear down the walls but can't take away the memories. Easy money, follows a couple forced into a criminal existence, and, land of hope and dreams, finally gets a studio incarnation, featuring saxophone from the big man, the late Clarence Clemons. We are alive, is a brilliant Johnny Cash type track, about the souls of the dead, still alive and kicking. If there are any weak tracks it's the brooding, my depression, and the throwaway, you've got it. Wrecking ball, is a brilliant album, which I believe will eventually go down as a Springsteen classic. This is a rather refreshing album with plenty of hints of 60s soft rock, but with a modern twist, as well as the excellent vocal work of Turner and Kane. The overall sound of the album is really nice. A warm, full-bodied and detailed sound that fits well with all the songs on the album. The strings really add to this to differentiate it and give it an extra sense of drama. Lyrically, the album is very strong. I really liked the nostalgic words of 'The Dream Synopsis' and the fast-paced, almost urgent feel of 'Aviation'. There's certainly a genuine and refined feel to the words of every song, and their delivery, as mentioned before, is really good. One area that does lack is the structure. While there's no one song that genuinely feels out of place, the album jumps around in terms of pacing, and there were a number of points when songs didn't feel like they didn't belong one after the other. Its other main weakness is that it does get a little on the boring side around the middle. Though every song is certainly distinguishable from the next, they lose the energy of the opening until 'Pattern' comes on. It means the album is fine to have on in the background, but tracks like 'Bad Habits' and 'She Does The Woods' aren't tempting enough to listen to on their own. Overall though, I am suitably impressed. Turner is certainly best when he's with the Arctic Monkey's, but that's not to say he isn't at home with Kane. This is an interesting and well developed, if rather incohesive, side project that I will certainly be listening to for a while yet."  [+]  Reply

"I'm a total sucker for this type of music. Hazy, laconic, drugged out. The perfect stuff for a codeine cough syrup bender. To me, it's the ultimate romantic music in the world. While my kids ( & probably most well adjusted people) think this music sounds depressing, I find it the happiest most uplifting stuff in the entire world and almost nothing puts me in a better mood. As far as I can tell, this is as good as any Beach House record released. And I've been a fan of theirs since Devotion. I definitely like it better than Depression Cherry. A lot of it has to do with the guitars which are sometimes set to stun as well as the more stripped down production. Plus, there's not a single clunker among the batch. Unlike some people, I actually love it when a band finds something they are really, really good at and than just subtly tinker with that formula for the rest of their career. Grade: A. Totally addicting dream pop which I would put up against any of their other releases. "  [+]  Reply
