I've finally crumbled and put Björk at number 1. There's a lot to unpack about Vespertine. Firstly, this album was written while she was starring in the Lars Von Trier movie, Dancer in the Dark (a great movie by the way, too bad Lars Von Trier is a creep). After making this film and expressing herself "extrovertedly", Björk decided she wanted to make an "introverted" album. Therefore a lot of the beats on Vespertine are understated. On top of the minimal beats, she put, among other things, harps, music boxes, celestas, and choir vocals. Secondly, she had started an intense relationship with director Matthew Barney, which resulted in the lyrics becoming even more personal and erotic than before. All this coalesces into an incredibly beautiful and rewarding album. This is an album to listen to while just sitting/laying down and nothing else. Go listen!

2000s Boris recorded an insane amount of untouchable material, but it's this album that stands as a pillar in their discography. It's a collection of their best songs, done live with Merzbow, and their energy is almost incomprehensible. Merzbow adds a layer of noise to these renditions that just drown you in sound, only occasionally giving reprieve before forcing you back into the ocean of turbulence. Rock Dream is truly a harrowing experience, standing at 110 minutes, but it is an essential live album and piece of music.
