While Nevermind changed me at 13, this album changed me at 20. The Blues Explosion taught me that attitude is as big a part of rock and roll as anything. I started working at a radio station because of these guys. Take the Rolling Stones at their sleaziest, put them in a blender with cheap bourbon, cigarette butts, women's panties, and a RL Burnside CD, and out pours Acme. Drink it sloppily and smack your lips. A powerhouse album that rocks and rolls from start to finish. I can't recommend it enough. [First added to this chart: 01/06/2012]

I know this is a re-imagining of Woody Guthrie's writing, but Wilco and Billy Bragg seemed to be the perfect artists to bring it to life. They seem to perfectly select which songs are better suited to which artist, basing selections on vocals, instrumental sound, and even political tone. Nothing tops California Stars and Way Over Yonder in the Minor Key. [First added to this chart: 01/06/2012]

Blue Rodeo is the epitome of Canadiana. Not the Tragically Hip, not Arcade Fire. These guys are mellow, deep, connected to the people and the land, and musically gifted. And this is their best album. [First added to this chart: 01/06/2012]

I give R.E.M. credit. They took a risk here - went for a murkier, fuzzier, bolder sound. They deviated from their usual, and got mixed reviews. Some loved it, some hated it. I think it's brilliant. [First added to this chart: 01/08/2012]

When things were getting too bleak and grungy, Sloan recorded this pop-rock masterpiece. They are criminally underrated in both Canadian and 90s rock records. [First added to this chart: 11/04/2012]

Thunderous. Chris Cornell showed me that vocalists can shred their throat and still be pitch perfect. Best front-man ever, and his band isn't too shabby either. Nirvana opened the door, but with this album, Soundgarden ripped it off it's hinges. [First added to this chart: 01/06/2012]

I don't like live albums. I found the 'unplugged' trend contrived. But Kurt Cobain sounds so in touch with his audience, baring himself raw. The covers are fantastic, the originals given new life. A gem. [First added to this chart: 01/09/2012]

Strong from start to finish. Listening to this, you drink in loss and sadness, but are somehow bracketed with a feeling of hope. Stipe's voice has never been so emotive, and the melodies flow beautifully. Totally deserving of its reputation. Narrowly shades out Monster as best R.E.M. [First added to this chart: 01/06/2012]

They came to my university after Pablo Honey, and they sold out in 6 minutes. I was lucky. I got to hear the beginnings of this album, as Radiohead was finding it's pace and turning into the greatest artists of the modern era. Thom Yorke was no longer focusing on his own feelings, but how he saw the world. They were the anti-Oasis - thoughtful and deliberate. Excellent. [First added to this chart: 01/06/2012]

Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some charts can have several thousand ratings)

This chart has a Bayesian average rating of 86.5/100, a mean average of 85.3/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 86.5/100. The standard deviation for this chart is 12.0.

Cool enough chart that reveals your love of music from just 4 nations - USA, UK, Canada & Ireland and isn't afraid to have a decent number of lesser known albums that you have discovered on your journey - kudos for that. Big tick for your love of home grown music.
I am surprised that with a chart that is over 10 years old, that the amazing music/artists from countries outside your top 4 nations have not made even a minor impact.

¡Nice chart!
Good way to know Canadian artists outside Arcade Fire. I'll check out Sloan and Blue Rodeo.

Very cool chart, it shows a lot of personality! Very north-american though. But I will for sure check out some albums from your list.

Precise, short commments. Acme is Burnside and Stones (maybe a little Velvet, too?). You've given me some new titles to hear. Thx for that. Love the Canadian titles, as it will allow me more exposure. Overall, nicely researched chart, amigo. Thumbs up.

Great chart! You've got many familiar names here, but also a lot of albums I've never heard of. I'm looking forward to exploring some of this. :D
