They are not reinventing the wheel or anything with this record, but that's because they don't need to. It all feels very Tool, which I would describe as some sort of "meditative" prog metal. Long songs, big build-ups, and an overall slow pace. Tool is for patient metalheads, on a couple of levels. I think the 13 year wait has satisfied the hype, but IMO not exceeded it. I have listened to the album about 4 times now, perhaps my rating might go up with more listens. Favourites: Pneuma, Invincible, Culling Voices"  [+]  Reply

When I was going through a big bad breakup Beck's Sea Change totally destroyed me (you know, in a good way, the way music should when you're the saddest). This album is a lot like that one. It's less intense than Bjork's Vulnicura but just as wounded in a different way. The strings are glorious and give me goosebumps on multiple occasions, and I like when she mixes it up with sweet little subtle jams like New Love Cassette. But the last song, Chance, gave me goosebumps just typing its title. A true swansong. Just ethereally stunning. Well done, Angel Olsen. "  [+]  Reply

The album really kicks into gear with the superb threesome beginning with the excellent "Comeback Kid" , followed by "Jupier 4" ( named after the instrument responsible for much of the album's sound) followed by "Seventeen" My only complaint would be the closer "Stay" , probably the weakest track here and IMO ending things on a real bummer Much has changed in Sharon's life since 2014's land mark 'Are We There' - she became a mum , her acting career took off and she broke through to mainstream consciousness . This album is a reflection of her new found maturity and responsibility This album will definitely be on my year end best of list "  [+]  Reply

The "no one can be my man" repetitive vocals is the only thing I dislike about anything on the whole record and it's on an otherwise good track. Bumped up my rating after another several listens. I noticed the average rating on this tanked from 83 to 79 as soon as fantano panned it. Interesting."  [+]  Reply

And I hate to use 'sounding same-y' as a critique because it basically just means I haven't listened to it enough to grasp its nuance, but that was my impression upon first listen. Other than Salem, which I felt harkened back to the doubly-self-titled album, the rest felt a lot like a rehashing of the ideas presented in the second half of 22 A Million, with a bit lesser success. But don't let me tell you what to like or not like. I'm just somebody. And my opinion is probably gonna change anyway. 75/100 (Above Average)"  [+]  Reply

Instead of coming off sounding like a bored music student arbitrarily fiddling with keys and knobs, here Thom sounds like he has an objective, a narrative (both musically and conceptually) that he wants to see through. From the groovy opening "Traffic" right through to the hauntingly layered "Runwayaway", the music is poised, diverse, feverish and constantly keeping you guessing. This isn't "side-project Thom", this is a master of his craft sitting down and taking time to sketch out and construct at once an earnest and euphoric collection of music. It's no secret Radiohead's previous two albums left some die-hards dissatisfied. This will not."  [+]  Reply

Although it isn't necessary, o...""After having listened to this 6+ times over the past couple of days I can firmly say that this is one of the best records The National has ever produced. I loved every second of this from the very beginning, and every time I've listened to it my love has only grown. Although it isn't necessary, one can better understand I Am Easy To Find if seen as a companion to the short film and vice-versa. They compliment each other in a magnificent way. Providing not only imagery but context for the lyrics, which are some of the best the band has ever written. In "Quiet Light", the first verse struck a chord with me as few other songs in their catalogue have done. This album shows us that The National can still evolve as a band, incorporating new elements into their songwriting but still maintaining their own style. The guest vocals don't feel alien, but compliment Matt's voice in the best way possible. The contrast between high and low tones makes every song reach deeper into the soul. This synergy is best heard in "Where Is Her Head", an extremely energetic song about parent paranoia. I Am Easy To Find is a record about marriage (oh, surprise) and about being a parent. The tracklist follows a narrative; it has a three-act structure that shows us the evolution of the narrator through all of his dilemmas, and when you realize you've reached "Light Years", you can contemplate what a beautiful experience you just had. The strings, the arrengements, everything in here is extremely well done. It may feel somehow long at first, but the more you listen to it, the more it grows on you and it's when you can start dissecting the songs at a deeper level. I Am Easy To Find is my favorite record of 2019 and it may become one of my all-time favorites this decade. In my opinion, it doesn't top Boxer or High Violet, but it's still an almost-perfect album. A very beautiful experience that only gets better with time. I may raise my 90 to a 95 soon."  [+]  Reply
