My History in Music
by dihansse

This is a top 100 chart of my personal musical history via albums in which I try to stick to the adagio of one album per artist. Next to a number of classics I have tried to include some hidden treasures but also some guilty pleasures to which I still stick. This means that I had to leave out some artists that I really appreciate but didn't make this overall top 100: Sorry Rolling Stones (the Beatles were better), sorry Bruce, sorry Jimi, sorry the Who, sorry ELO, sorry the Police and sorry many, many others (but you'll find them in my Decades lists).

I also tried to stick to regular albums but sometimes live albums or eaven Greatest Hits couldn't be avoided. By the way, in my custom charts I also added an alternative top chart which takes a more mathematical view on my personal taste meaning that it is the result of scoring my favorite albums and in this way of course doesn't stick to the one album by artist rule, which means several (more than 2) albums by Beatles, Sebadoh, Sonic Youth, Husker Du, Dinosaur Jr, Pavement, etc.

This was really a hard choice between two of my all time favorite live albums, this one (which doesn't contain my favorites "Jessica" and "Ramblin' Man") or "Wipe the Windows, Check the Oil, Dollar Gas" which doesn't contain "Whipping Post" and "Mountain Jam". And they both contain "In Memory of Elisabeth Reed". With these 5 tracks you've got my absolute favorite songs of the Allman Brothers Band.

Why choose this album then: well I think because of the general bluesy/Jazzy atmosphere surrounding this one: especially the long and winding jamming tracks like Mountain Jam and especially Whipping Post are outstanding.

Although the "Fillmore Concerts" is normally the obvious choice for a live album of this band, I like this one better because it contains more of my favorite tracks although.

With this contribution I also would like to pay tribute to the two other big Southern bands that I really like but didn't make it in this Album top 100: Molly Hatchet and especially Lynyrd Skynyrd with their fantastic "Free Bird" which still contains the best guitar solo (or maybe better guitar trio) ever.

This is a second album in the postpunk movement I'd like to present: unlike the Kids, Red Zebra is not pure punk any more but is more tending towards New Wave and even Cold wave. This album is a best of. Red Zebra was a bit more socially engaged than the Kids which more had the no future attitude of the real punks.

They started of with a number of absolute classics: "I can't Live in A Living Room" and "The Art of Conversation", TV Activity" and "The Beauty of the Beast" which both have fantastic riffs. In a later stage they came up with some equally good stuff and they are still performing live.

If you like this and would like to discover other postpunk bands of the beginning of the eighties, please check out songs from The Emplyoyees ("Pick it Up") Lavvi Ebbel, Arbeid Adelt, Neon Judgement and Front 242 (more electronic).

I know the Blue Aeroplanes are not the most famous band in the world, but if you do discover them you're in for a treat because this album and its predecessor "Swagger" are real gems.

These tracks are not so much song but are nearly spoken word but there is a kind of special atmosphere around them which makes them very likeable.

Apart from these two albums, the rest of their musical history is not that great but these two make it all good.

Elliott Smith is not an artist which I followed as I suppose as much as he deserves(d) but this album I really like especially because of the three songs which excel on this album. [First added to this chart: 02/10/2017]

In this string of softer albums between all the harder stuff I already presented this is an especially good one and personal favorite of mine. The good songs on this album are topped up by the beautiful voice of Harriet Wheeler. [First added to this chart: 02/10/2017]

I really like Prince but none of his albums made it to this albums top 100.

But What I mainly like out of the Prince scène is this album from Wendy Melvoin & Lisa Cole who were two of the musicians who played in his band. I especially like the kinda psychedelic sound of this album and the very good singing.

Although announced as an EP for me this collection on songs on "Beaster" are fiercer and better than the ones on the more obvious "hit" album "Copper Blue" which nearly all also belong to my personal favorites.

After two solo albums, Bob Mould started a group "Sugar" which was intended to show the harder edge of Bob Mould (like he did with Husker Du) and that's what he did. The intensity on the rock songs like "Judas Cradle" and "JC Auto" is nearly frightening.

When the Pixies broke up, the Breeders showed how big the share of Kim Deal was in that group. Although she is a bit sloppy in the finishing touch of her songs, they have a kind of naiveté that is fantastic to hear. This mood is very clear on her first album "Pod" which is so refreshing in this naiveté it sounds fantastic. However the second album "Last Splash" has so much good riffing and good songs that I have chosen this one.

And the main example of this is "Canonball" which has one of the best stop-start intros I know and also the start of "Divine Hammer" gives way to a fantastic song with an incredible drive to it (listen to the bang bang part round the end of the first minute of the track).

To chose my favorite album from Dinosaur Jr. was a difficult choice because there are in fact three Dinosaur Jr.'s: the first period with Lou Barlow, the second period where Lou Barlow was thrown out and formed Sebadoh (see next album in this thread) and the third period where Lou was/is back.

Although a lot of people prefer the first period (especially "Bug" and "You're Living All over Me"), I like the second period better because I discovered the band with the first album of the second period "Green Mind" (especially with the fantastic "The Wagon"). The third period is maybe even better because of the return of Lou Barlow and because the guitar playing of J Mascis is even more shredding, but however I have chosen here the follow up of "Green Mind": "Where You Been".

Like on nearly every album of the band, there are some excellent tracks on it like "Out There" and "Get Me".

When Lou Barlow left (or maybe better was thrown out of) Dinosaur Jr he formed Sebadoh. While J Mascis was certainly the best guitar player of the two, Lou was definitely the best song writer of the two as this band has proven over and over and is one of my favorite bands ever.

The CD I most cherish is in fact a compilation of the ep "Rocking the Forest" (which contains fantastic tracks like "Gimme Indie Rock" and "It's so Hard to Fall in Love") and "Sebadoh vs Helmet" not in the least because it contains one of my favorite songs "Brand New Love". I have seen Sebadoh a few times live but I have never seen him play a version of this song live which I regret a little. The way this songs sets of very slowly and the way it ends in absolute chaos is beyond words.

This album is the quintessential indie album to me and is my absolute favorite in this top 100. It has very rough feeling but it's so honest it almost makes you cry. Of the latter album most of other tracks are also not less than fantastic, eg the duo Mean "Distance" (again slow beginning erupting in chaos) and "...Burned" (slow start going over in beautiful guitar part).

Apart from the first eps/albums which are a bit noodling, the other CD's are also magnificent with their semi-hits "Ocean" and "Flame" amongst of the highlights.
