Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. I'm returning to give you a 100 because I agree with your statement about box sets/comps. AND THIS MUSIC IS JUST SO GODAMM COOL. Just like everything else in this world, we don't have to have identical tastes to appreciate any other's love for music.

Speaking of comps and boxsets, I think I forgot to add the Velvet Underground’s Complete Matrix Tapes. Awesome way to rediscover their songs.
Some of the releases on this chart wouldn’t make sense without the compilation (Autechre’s NTS Sessions, The Caretaker’s EATEOT), or wouldn’t be able to showcase the best non album takes (Airiel’s Winks & Kisses, Slowdive’s Blue Day).
But yeah sometimes you just can’t choose the best album when everything is awesome (Joy Division).
