A dark, drugged yet hilarious funk masterpiece. No one bridged 'white' and 'black' music like Sly. From smokey jazz interludes to country yodelling there is audaciousness everywhere. Throughout, the funk pulse and Sly's outrageous singing build on James Brown's legacy and take it to another level. Few albums capture complete free-spirited, drug addled fun quite like this one.

Genius songwriting. Catchy, warm, fun yet at the same time thought provoking and occasionally weird. Along with VU this guy invented "alternative" rock, or in this case pop. This is the last gasp of the sixties when "genre" was secondary to the "song".

Just amazing. A more raw and open album with this quality of songwriting you will never find. Her vocal acrobatics put the modern r'n'b wannabes to shame. And when Joni did it it enhanced the song as opposed to the song being a vehicle for showiness. Her guitar playing is just as incredible and wildly original.

My man, solid list! It was interesting to see the few from the 00's peeking out from above all the masterpieces of the ages. Have always been a huge Zombies fan. I got my lil' brother into them a few years back and--for about a year--he walked around touting them as his favourite band. Anyway, good list.
