Top 100 Greatest Music Albums by Fergenaprido

After a year I've had a chance to listen to many more albums, though still not nearly enough I think. My music listening and rating god sidetracked this year by icheckmovies, but with the new year coming I got back around to it. The changes are mostly due to listening to new albums, and less to do with reevaluating previous ones.

This only includes studio albums and original film scores. EPs, musicals, and some soundtracks will show up in the decade and year charts. Singles, greatest hits, and multi-artist compilations may make it into custom charts later on. I've listened to more varied music this time 'round, including many older albums, but that diversity isn't reflected so much in my overall chart as it is in the decade charts.

I've rated all albums on this chart 80 or higher, and I've included my favourite tracks in the comments. In my decade charts the cut-off is 75 or higher, and in the year charts it is 70 or higher (and I'm only creating year charts once I've listened to at least five 70+ albums). So if you don't see something here you might suspect, check out those charts. If they're not there, chances are I haven't heard the album yet. Let me know if you think I might like something.

I was surprised this came out on top, but perhaps it's because I find it difficult to compare instrumental-only albums with the rest. This is the album I could listen to while doing literally anything: dishes, running, sex, driving, sleeping, ... anything. I think I even have it memorized. Winter; Duel; Hymn. A consistently lively and catchy album until the end when it turns more melancholy, but no less enjoyable. Plus, I love that he plays the drums with no sticks. What You Wish For; Rainy Day; Either Way. [First added to this chart: 02/24/2011]

A kickass album from start to glorious finish, I love the combination of instrumentals with Róisín Murphy's vocals. You can feel the raw emotion that went into making these songs as the band was breaking up romantically and professionally. Forever More; Over & Over; Familiar Feeling. Enjoyable catchy tunes, the first half is better than the second, but since they're all mostly short and sweet they don't overextend their welcome. Such Great Heights; Sleeping In; Nothing Better. [First added to this chart: 02/24/2011]

Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some charts can have several thousand ratings)

This chart has a Bayesian average rating of 77.8/100, a mean average of 73.3/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 73.3/100. The standard deviation for this chart is 13.8.

Drawn to your chart just because I found Danny Michel on You Tube to hear his Bowie tributes, then went to check out this site for comments on him - sadly lacking and looks like you're the only one to have him.
I like your chart but don't know most of the acts but will check in later and maybe check out some of your picks - when I get through the current wish list. Just not enough hours in the day

I could tell you were Canadian (like me) right away in looking at your list - not just because of the inclusion of a number of Canadian acts. Your appreciation for Celtic influenced music is another giveaway. I am shocked at the lack of appreciation for Celtic music on BEA, and as John Ralston Saul, the husband of our former Governor-General, once wrote, Canada is more Celtic than is commonly acknowledged. Some of us, at least, seem to get it... I also want to re-iterate as mentioned in the previous comment by jhuik how you acknowledge female artists to a much greater extent than the average BEA member. You are a pluralist and open-minded Canadian and hopefully your list is influential. I know I will be listening to the albums I don't know on it. Thanks.

I love the love for Canada and women represented here. Some of the out-of-the-ordinary picks like Kings of Convenience and Stars genuinely need more love on this site. Some of it is not my thing, probably, but I still appreciate our commonalities and your comments.

I can't really rate this as I haven't heard most of these albums. I must say though it contains the most artists I've never heard of or listened to....which is not at all a bad thing. If nothing else this is a very original list.

I like the chart. I don't agree with it, but it's consistent. Dissing the decades through the 80's (sans Rumours) is a major concern, or I truly feel happy for you. If you've dismissed the decades that's not good. If you've yet to truly delve into some great music from the past you're in for some great revelations. Just as I am in for real treats with some newer music. My problem with some of the newer stuff is a lack of song structure. Simply put, the songs are technically wonderful but they lack feel. In the past Rock was built on the Blues, R&B and Gospel. Now it's built on Radiohead, Pink Floyd and The Cure. Also, the way albums are recorded sucks. A sixteen track recording still required some feel. A live element. Today's music is disjointed. Parts fit together to fit form a whole. Sorry to go on a diatribe on your list forum, it just seems your list opened up a can of worms. By the way...that's good!

Although you & I don't really share the same taste in music I really rather like your chart. Enough in there that I know or am aware of to make me want to listen to some of the other stuff here.
