A second batch of albums to listened to of 2014:
- To Be Kind by Swans (nr 4 on the overall BEA top chart of 2014): I was in for a long haul on this album and a long haul it was. There are many fantastic pieces on this album even in long songs like Bring The Sun/Toussaint L'Ouverture but then there are these long and very boring pieces as well again within the same track. So it is really a mixed bag for me but in the end I decided to include it in my personal top chart of 2014 because it did make an impact.
- St. Vincent by St. Vincent (nr 6): a bit too much electronics without good songs for me.
- Black Messiah by D'Angelo And The Vanguard (nr 7): the soul this album is so smooth it rolls of my skin: a big no no for me.
- LP1 by FKA Twigs (nr 8 ): also not really my thing with the first and the last song being the best because the nice voice she comes out the best in these ones.
- Royal Blood by Royal Blood (nr 9): this album suffers from the same problem with most 2 piece bands: the music becomes very uniform after a few tracks although they rock very hard on some tracks like the first track and the great Figure It Out. But overall not completely convincing.
The next album to listen to is This Is All Yours by Alt-J.

and some more albums of 2014 I listened to:
- This Is All Yours by โ (alt-j) (nr 10 on the overall BEA top chart of 2014): I didn't find one good song on this album
- Alvvays by Alvvays nr 11): this album felt like a breath of fresh air between all the not very good albums I already had to listen to from this year. Very good rocking album
- They Want My Soul by Spoon nr 12): Upto now I hadn't heard any of the 5 albums of Spoon in the top 2500 and also not the new 2017 album. However this particular album isn't gonna convert me to the Spoondom. Maybe the earlier albums will be more to my taste.
- You're Dead! by Flying Lotus (nr 13): I quite liked the jazzy instrumental pieces on this album but as this was not the main part of the album...
- Sun Structures by Temples (nr 14): OK this is a bit of anachronism in 2014 but this is a very good sixties album and I really liked the The Golden Throne and Keep In The Dark. They even sound a bit like the Madchester scene on some of the tracks. All in all a good album and certainly better than Tame Impala.
The next album to listen to is Pinata by Freddie Gibbs & Madlib.

Fourth list of albums of 2014 I listened to (and I must admit skipped through):
- Piรฑata by Freddie Gibbs & Madlib (nr 15): rap
- Morning Phase by Beck nr 16): for one reason or another I only listened to some tracks of this album in 2014 although I liked Sea Change a lot and this album is a bit the twin sister although a bit softer. There are a couple of good tracks here like Morning and Blue Moon but there are also many weaker ones. Nevertheless the scales tilt in favour of including it in my personal top chart
- Pom Pom by Ariel Pink (nr 17): The last track on this album is good but the rest is a bit at the same time over the top and songs that are not good enough.
- Syro by Aphex Twin (nr 18 ): not my taste
- Ultraviolence by Lana Del Rey (nr 19): sometimes her voice is not too r&b but in many cases a bit too poppy (and r&b)
- 2014 Forest Hills Drive by J. Cole (nr 21): rap
- 1989 by Taylor Swift (nr 22): an insult to my ears
- Turn Blue by The Black Keys nr 24): again one good track, Weight of Love, but otherwise I already heard better from Dan and his mates
- Are We There by Sharon Van Etten (nr 25): I must say i like her voice and some of the songs are not bad either but overall not good enough
- It's Album Time by Todd Terje (nr 26): this seems to be very dated dance music (with all the bleeps and oinks that go with it) and sometimes nearly Leisure Suit Larry lounge, and I didn't really dig it.
The next album to listen to is Too Bright from Perfume Genius.

This is my last contribution to the year 2014:
- Too Bright by Perfume Genius (nr 28 on the overall BEA top chart of 2014): I know this artist mainly from his first admit I don't really like. But that's different for this one: especially the first 7 tracks all have that something special which makes music interesting and which I'm sure they might grow more on my after a few more listens. The latter part of the album is in my opinon not that good.
- Everyday Robots by Damon Albarn (nr 29): certainly not the best album of Damon.
- Singles by Future Islands (nr 30): I've found nothing special in this album
- Lazaretto by Jack White nr 33 and the last album with an overall BEA rank better than 2500): The music on this album is bluesy and the guitars are fuzzy but otherwise nothing interesting enough to make want to include this album in my overall top chart of the year.
And this ends my journey into the year 2014 which to me is not a very interesting year in music. This is the overall conclusion (with at the start the BEA overall rank and after that the BEA year rank and then my rannk before and after this listening session:

I'm again as near to today as i can so I'll retrace my steps again and move back to 1965.
But before that I'll give (for the second time) a bit of stats at where I am in this journey:
So my intention is to listen to all the first 2500 ranked albums on the BEA website:
- of these I had excluded 120 albums (because they're compilations, live albums, etc)
- I had already listened to 137 albums before which were not good enough for my personal top charts
- I had already 576 albums in my personal charts before this session
- In these sessions, I already listened to 185 albums I appreciated enough to include in my personal charts
- In these sessions, I already listened to 458 albums I didn't like enough to include in my personal charts
- which leaves 1024 albums still to listen to
Apart from these 2500 albums I have 973 albums which don't appear in the 2500 but that I also like.
And with this I can start listening to the albums of 1965 in the overall BEA top 2500 I haven't listened to yet.

I'm back at the beginning and will start again with 5 year leaps beginning in 1965 (with the albums having an overall BEA rank of better than 2500)/
This is the list of albums I will go through with at the start the overall BEA rank and after that the BEA year rank and my year rank before I start this listening session.
BEA Rank Title By Band BEA YearRank - My Rank before
20 Highway 61 Revisited By Bob Dylan 1 - To listen
22 Rubber Soul By The Beatles 2 - 2
94 A Love Supreme By John Coltrane 3 - Already Listened
96 Bringing It All Back Home By Bob Dylan 4 - To listen
201 Help! By The Beatles 5 - 1
356 Otis Blue / Otis Redding Sings Soul By Otis Redding 6 - To listen
542 My Generation By The Who 7 - To listen
928 The Beach Boys Today! By The Beach Boys 8 - To listen
1080 Pastel Blues By Nina Simone 9 - To listen
1102 Spiritual Unity By Albert Ayler 10 - Jazz excluded
1294 Mr. Tambourine Man By The Byrds 11 - To listen
1338 A Charlie Brown Christmas By Vince Guaraldi Trio 12 - Easy listening excluded
1468 Out Of Our Heads By The Rolling Stones 13 - To listen
1499 Live At The Regal By B.B. King 14 - Live Excluded
1610 Here Are The Sonics!!! By The Sonics 15 - To listen
1789 Jackson C Frank By Jackson C Frank 16 - To listen
1982 Maiden Voyage By Herbie Hancock 17 - To listen
2303 Bert Jansch By Bert Jansch 18 - To listen
46873 Eve Of Destruction By Barry McGuire 239 - 3
This means that I'm starting with two Dylan albums which I will discuss together:
- Highway 61 Revisited by Bob Dylan (nr 1 on the ovoverall BEA top chart of 1965) and Bringing It All Back Home by Bob Dylan (nr 4): I think there are much bigger fans of Bob Dylan on this site than me, but of course I can't deny his importance in music history and in a way I do like his nasality of course. These are the two albums where his electrical period started and both contain so many great songs that I can't do anything else than put them both in my personal top chart although not very high because to me there is a lot of filler on it.
The next album I will listen to is an Otis album.

The point with albums in the mid-60s: you know most of the songs and you have them on greatest hits compilations but you never bother to listen to the full albums. And when you do, you notice that they have a high quality on their own notwithstanding the fact there's always a bit of filler. There are some fine examples of those albums here:
- Otis Blue / Otis Redding Sings Soul by Otis Redding (nr 6 on the overall BEA top chart of 1965): The term R&B/soul has been really spoiled by those soulless R&B acts of nowadays but this guy has it both and is to me the best in this genre. There are a few real classics on this album like I've Been Loving You too Long and the great cover of Satisfaction. While this is not really my genre and not all the tracks are high quality I do find that I have to include this album in my personal top chart
- My Generation by The Who (nr 7): Of course there is the magnificent title track but the real highlight of this album is The Kids Are Alright which has an incredible vibe that not all songs have. Also A Legal Matter and I'm A Man are very Good which more than compensate the few weaker songs at the beginning of the album.
- The Beach Boys Today! by The Beach Boys (nr 8 ): this is an album where the diamond of Brian Wilson really started to shine and combined with the great close harmonies on songs like When Grow Up (to be a man) and some of the slower songs in the latter half of the album, this makes it outstanding.
The next album to listen to Pastel Blues by Nina Simone.

This is the next few albums of 1965 I listened to:
- Pastel Blues by Nina Simone (nr 9 on the overall BEA top chart of 1965): Not a bad album but not really the best of Nina Simone. Strange Fruit is of course as haunting as ever but the version of Billie Holiday in my opinion still without competition. Overall not for my personal top chart of 1965).
- Spiritual Unity by Albert Ayler (nr 10): I changed my mind about not listening to jazz album in these session but this one is a bit too free jazz and "experimental" for my taste.
- Mr. Tambourine Man by The Byrds (nr 11): There are maybe a lot of Dylan covers on this album of which the title tracks is the best example but they however make them completely their own. Apart from that there are three absolute classics to be found: I'll Feel A Whole Lot Better, The Bells of Rhymney and All I Really Want To Do. The other tracks are maybe a bit less good but overall this album is one of the best of the year.
- A Charlie Brown Christmas by Vince Guaraldi Trio (nr 12): some good piano playing but overall a bit too mellow to really like
- Out Of Our Heads by The Rolling Stones (nr 13): Satisfaction and especially the Last Time alone is enough to make this a classic. The other tracks are maybe not that good but overall a go
- Live At The Regal by B.B. King (nr 14): This live album can count as a regular album so I added it here but although there's some real fine guitar playing it doesn't contain any of the highlights of his musical carreer so I decided not to include this one.
- Here Are The Sonics!!! by The Sonics (nr 15): the recording quality of this album is really really bad especially in tracks like Roll Over Beethoven. These guys do rock however but real punk it ain't in my opinion. Like Seth I especially like Have Love Will Travel but overall this album is not really original in my opinion so I decided not to include it in my personal top chart
The next album to listen to is Jackson C Frank.

There are not so many albums of 1965 in the overall BEA top 2500 so this is my last contribution for that year:
- Jackson C. Frank by Jackson C. Frank (nr 16 on the overall BEA top chart of 1965): some very nice fingerpicking but overall a bit too soft to really appeal.
- Maiden Voyage by Herbie Hancock (nr 17): one of the better jazz albums to be found but not something I would buy (in those times long ago where you still had to buy albums).
- Bert Jansch by Bert Jansch (nr 18 and the last album of 1965 with an overall BEA rank of better than 2500): a bit the same as with Jackson C. Frank: not too bad but not enough to keep it interesting a whole album.
And this ends this year where I can't really say I discovered something new but nevertheless with some very good albums which are still influential to nowadays rock music.
And to conclude here is the final list with at the start the overall BEA rank and after that the BEA year rank and my rank before and after this listening session:
BEA Rank Title By Band BEA YearRank - My Rank before To My Rank after
201 Help! By The Beatles 5 - 1 To 1
22 Rubber Soul By The Beatles 2 - 2 To 2
1281 Mr. Tambourine Man By The Byrds 11 - To listen To 3
533 My Generation By The Who 7 - To listen To 4
927 The Beach Boys Today! By The Beach Boys 8 - To listen To 5
1468 Out Of Our Heads By The Rolling Stones 13 - To listen To 6
96 Bringing It All Back Home By Bob Dylan 3 - To listen To 7
20 Highway 61 Revisited By Bob Dylan 1 - To listen To 8
46873 Eve Of Destruction By Barry McGuire 239 - 3 To 9
355 Otis Blue / Otis Redding Sings Soul By Otis Redding 6 - To listen To 10
98 A Love Supreme By John Coltrane 4 - Already Listened To A No
1078 Pastel Blues By Nina Simone 9 - To listen To A No
1096 Spiritual Unity By Albert Ayler 10 - To listen To A No
1334 A Charlie Brown Christmas By Vince Guaraldi Trio 12 - To listen To A No
1501 Live At The Regal By B.B. King 14 - To listen To A No

1980 Maiden Voyage By Herbie Hancock 17 - To listen To A No
2333 Bert Jansch By Bert Jansch 18 - To listen To A No
And as you know I will again skip 5 years and move over to 1970.

So a great year for Eric Clapton, Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Cat Stevens, Van Morrisson and many others.
I have already started listening to the first two albums:
- After The Gold Rush by Neil Young (nr 2): of course I already knew nearly all the songs (from CSNY or live albums) but I didn't actually possess the album and it's certainly one of his best with absolute classics like Southern Man, Only Love Can Break Your Heart and When You Dance I can Really Love.
- Bridge Over Troubled Water by Simon And Garfunkel (nr 3): and another classic with again many classics like the title tracks and Cecilia but not all tracks are of the same quality. However still a classic.
The next album to listen to is John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band, also not really an album which will be really new to me.

A large number of classics of 1970:
- John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band by John Lennon (nr 4 on the overall BEA top chart of 1970): Of course John Lennon made his best work with the Beatles but this album is also a token of his genius although not everything on the album is of the highest quality and even sometimes a bit dated. Mother and Working Class Hero are the best tracks. A classic anyway.
- American Beauty by Grateful Dead (nr 13): I know many people regard this album as a classic and I saw the making of in Classic Albums but somehow this band and this album doesn't completely connect with me and while they're not bad, none of the tracks are really good to me so I won't include it in my personal top chart.
- Cosmo's Factory by Creedence Clearwater Revival (nr 14): completely the opposite with this album which is just cluttered with classics with a lot of tracks I already knew but there is one great discovery I made: the guitars in Ramble Tamble, a song I hear for the first time, are absolutely fantastic.
- Bryter Layter by Nick Drake (nr 15): I have also heard the other two albums from Nick Drake and this one is certainly the best to me but somehow between the nice instrumentation which makes me think a bit of what Van Morrison was also doing on his classics around this time, I didn't discover any really good songs so sorry I know many people think otherwise but I won't include this album in my personal top chart
- Dรฉjร Vu by Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young (nr 16): I have their live album (4 way street) and I think I already have listened to this album but I didn't have in my possession but it's of course also an absolute classic with many many tracks like Carry On, Almost Cut My Hair etc etc
- Morrison Hotel by The Doors (nr 20): and another classic with especially Roadhouse Blues and Ship of Fools and Waiting for the Sun and many others.
The next album to listen to is Lola.. by The Kinks
