Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. This is a good chart with some great inclusions, but leans heavily on 80s British pop-rock.

Well balanced and entertaining Blur's Great escape simply masterful and Bowie is simply among my top 3 artists really good

I actually got "Dog Man Star" this week. I enjoyed it, but I prefer Suede's first. I've heard good things about Siouxsie's "Tinderbox", I'll give a try some time. Interesting picks !
