The Magic Whip finds Blur very much Lost. In. The. City. It is without a shadow of a doubt a brilliant album and an excellent return to form, sounding for all the world like the same band who released She's So High or even still The Great Escape, it will leave very few Blur fans disappointed - even if inevitably, you're left wanting more. We want to put everything, people, art, everything that exists, into little categories with certain attributes so that we don’t have to spend all of our time examining each individual thing to observe its unique properties. It’s just easier that way, it’s easier to see something and say “I now know what this thing is” because of how it has been categorized, either by us or someone else. This can be problematic though, especially in the world of music genres. If any one album fits perfectly into the hole of one genre, then chances are, that album is not particularly interesting (though this is not necessarily true). The best albums, the best music, transcends genres, they look genres in the face and directly defy them. The best music is the music that, when your friends ask about it, you say “It’s kind of a mix between….well it’s kind of like….. you know what just listen to it.” That’s what “You’re Dead!” is. There are so many different genres shoved into this 38-minute, 15-second album that it’ll make your head spin. This is one of the most all-over-the-place, neurotic, chaotic albums that I’ve ever heard. It’s really hard to pin it down in words, and that’s the beauty of it. Listening to this album is like being on a roller coaster with a loose lap-bar. The whole album deals with life and death, it feels like this album is about the futility of life, the futility of what you do with your life. It’s an album that absolutely requires, and will take by force, your whole attention, and needs multiple listenings, and even then, you might not even fully grasp what has just happened, as if you just witnessed a man resurrected from the dead, this album will be swirling around in your head and you may even question whether or not it actually happened, but be assured, it happened, and you loved every glorious, frantic second of it."  [+]  Reply

It seems pretty clear this time that the songs revolve around Kevin Abstract's lyrical concepts and his addictive hooks. The beats on this album are outstandingly produced. The group experiments heavily on this album. They don't just have tastes of different genres. They go DEEPLY into an assortment of music styles. For proof look no further than this line from "Give Yourself a Try" 'I was 25 and afraid to go outside / a millennial that baby-boomers like' This line resonated so strongly with me as my eldest daughter is a 19 yo millennial and she is literally afraid to go outside as her life is lived vicariously staring at a screen Any commentary that this is anything other than a great album is straight up wrong , it has so many great tracks: the pillar track "Give Youself a Try" , the beautiful acoustics of " Be My Mistake" , the dripping sarcasm and online commentary of "The Man Who Married a Robot" , the absolutely beautiful strings of "Inside Your Mind" , the smokey piano bar ballad "Mine" to jaw dropping closer "I always Wanna Die" . No , this is a cracking release This album is part A in a 2 part release with part B 'Notes on a Conditional Form' arriving in 2019 , we wait with bated breath for its arrival This is what music should sound like in 2018 - well produced , smart , sassy , angry, confused , love lorn and varied like a mixed tape Brilliant "  [+]  Reply

"As most mainstream pop albums, it's fairly inconsistent. There's a lot of filler (How you get the girl, This love, I know places), but the songs that do work are pretty good, I must admit. I think that the run of "Blank space", "Style", "Out of the woods" and "All you had to do was stay" is great...""As most mainstream pop albums, it's fairly inconsistent. There's a lot of filler (How you get the girl, This love, I know places), but the songs that do work are pretty good, I must admit. I think that the run of "Blank space", "Style", "Out of the woods" and "All you had to do was stay" is great, and those four are the best tracks on the album by a mile. The second half, though, is a little lackluster, but then again, I don't think "1989" was ever designed to be more than a collection of singles. Some of them are great, yes, but the album as a whole doesn't hold for too long. It's not incredibly original either, since "Welcome to New York" rips off the piano riff from "Baba O'Riley", "Wildest dreams" seems like a cover of a Lana del Rey song, "Shake it off"'s beat is heavily reminiscent of Pharrell Williams's "Happy", "Clean" sounds a lot like Lorde and "How you get the girl" is so Katy Perry. The worst thing about these influences is that they're blatantly displayed but Taylor doesn't try to do anything unique with them on the aforementioned tracks. On the other hand, the lyrics are not incredibly mature, but they often manage to sound relatable and nuanced enough, and like I said, the tracks that work are really good, especially "Style", which I think it's her best song to date without a doubt. So to sum up, I would say "1989" is an alright diversion with a couple of gems, but it's far from being a memorable album."  [+]  Reply
