Top 100 Greatest Music Albums by Crhmgs

Edit: 12/03/2021 this is today's chart of the day, I just want to thank you all for being so nice and reciprocating, there are a lot of artists that I must check out and a lot of things i must put in order before finishing this, to be honest with you, I don't know if i will ever get to finish it, not because I don't want to, but because I don't have too much time nowadays, but yeah, whenever I have the chance to, i will re-visit this chart, delete albums, add albums, etc.

Look, this chart is a mess, mostly because i can't bring myself to advance as much as i would like to. But my idea is to make a chart that it's as equally divided; filled with popular records and with records that i think deserve more attention, a 50/50, if you will... But I don't have that kind of knowledge yet, well, maybe that isn't it, i think it's mostly that i want to pick records that i'll be comfortable with, and as of today i would say im about 30% happy with this chart, and look, I don't want to sound like a total indie guy or like someone who hasn't an opinion on his own either, or maybe even both. i'll try to utilize every space in this chart to say how i feel about the record and why i love it so much and give a little bit of trivia in the process, sometimes i will get so inspired that i will even try to write some bloody awful poetry, even if i know i might not have the widest vocabulary to do it. I do think that the one artist per chart rule is fair, but i don't want to use it, because there are so many records/artists i think they deserve all my love, even if they already had more than enough of it, lol, but that will change in the future (IT DID, SEE "EDIT") it's not like Radiohead or The Strokes need more points on BEA than they already have, so I don't know, we'll see... I do appreciate all feedback and even appreciate that you are here looking at this mess, i will update here each descriptions i have done, if you want to check them out you are free to do so, cause i honestly don't have any idea of when i'm going to finish this, but yeah, that's it.

I might be a lazy af, but when i do get to write, i write a lot (most of the time) so BEWARE.

Ohhh and some of the records have descriptions in both spanish and english just for the sake of it and because they actually help me to get my thoughts together and to do a more focused inspection on the record, BUT i will translate all that, so don't worry.

Descrpitions made so far:

- Bob Dylan - Blonde On Blonde
- The Afghan Whigs - Gentlemen
- Kanye West - The College Dropout
- Modest Mouse - Good News For People Who Love Bad News (This record has now been removed from this chart, but the original description is in my other chart, which is a recollection of the records that were in here, but for a reason were eliminated)
- GZA- Liquid Swords
- Yes - Fragile
- Buena Vista Social Club - Buena Vista Social Club
-Maroon 5 - Songs About Jane
-Silversun Pickups - Carnavas
-The Doors - Morrison Hotel
-The Cars - The Cars
-Babasónicos - Jessico (already translated)
-Pre)Thing - 22nd Century Lifestyle

Well, if you see more descriptions that aren't mentioned in here it might be because a) they aren't finished yet b) they suck... But anyway you are free to read them as well, I will try to finish them/improve them later... i just had a Déjà vu about this...

Well, enjoy!

EDIT: I'm totally convinced now that this chart sucks lol, don't get me wrong, I do love every single record i picked, but there is so much wasted potential and empty spaces that all in all, it just doesn't feel right, so I finally decided to improve it a little bit. You see, my biggest fear with this chart was not being able to give as many points as i think an artists deserve, and. I am truly sorry for every record that was left behind, i wish i could give every one of them 100 points, haha, but since i can't do that i will do my best to make this chart look how i think it should look. So as of now, i will apply the one artist per chart rule (EXCEPT for The Afghan Whigs, I really love that band) And additionally, i will do another chart with the albums that were eliminated from their position within the chart and also i will do another with my favorite records, so i won't have to be limited by the same rule again.

1980's Talking Heads masterpiece is highly regard as one of the best records ever, and it's easy to see why. The thing i love about this record is the variety of sounds and the spot on-production. Every single track is a journey throught the Talking Heads neurotic energy while they get deep into themes like: Obsession, mundane life, and yes, facts.

With the help from former Roxy Music member and now legendary musician, Brian Eno on the production, the band wanted to go to a different direction from previous records, hence, their interest for African Music (perhaps the song that resembles the most to Remain In Light might be "I Zimbra" from their previous record, which used a lot of instrumentation and blends of genres that were to be seen in Remain In Light) The experimentation from both the production side and the performance of the band is surreal from start to finish and this thing gets even more abstract on the latter half. Instrumentally and lyrically there's always something going on, and more often than not, it's really interesting; Remain In Light is layers upon layers upon layers of music, literally and conceptually and it's all so insane and it feels all over the place, but the beautiful thing it's that the record it's actually so masterfully and meticulously put together that it's hard to complain about anything.

The first track "Born Under Punches (The Heat Goes On)" is the Talking Heads at their funkiest, most hard hitting and perhaps even their most political moment of their career, to me the song symbolizes the hypocrisy of the government at large, talking about how the people are at the end of the day, a mean to an end. Tina kills it in here, she slaps so freaking hard that i think im going to burn, the chorus is epic and almost celestial. "Crosseyed And Painless" is another personal favourite, it deals with being obsessed with concepts, we humans made ourselves, and that brings the question; "are they perfect in the first place?" the"Facts are simple and facts are stright" part is one of my favourite lines ever. "The Great Curve" is the most fun track of the record by far and also, a favourite, it makes you wanna dance so bad.

My relationship with Mr. Dylan has been quite a ride so far... And Blonde on Blonde might possibly be my favourite record of all time. I didn't like it that much at first, but the more i listened to it, the more i fell in love with it, it's just a fantastic and well-crafted record. Every song it's different but, somehow all of them fit within this abstract, sad an magnificent world that Dylan created. This is one of those records that came in the right place and the right time and along with The Beatles's Revolver and The Beach Boys's Pet Sounds changed music as we know it, forever. but out of all of those records i prefer Blonde on Blonde because it was such an ambitious and beautiful proyect and i happen to think that it's for records like this one the reason why i listen to music. Still feels fresh after more than 50 years and in my opinion it's almost as relevant as Highway 61 Revisited. It has some of my all time favourite songs, sometimes one after the other, that's gotta worth something right?

My favourtie songs from the record are (pretty hard to pick, but here i go):

-Visions Of Johanna: is my 3rd favourite song of all time, and my favourite out of BoB. It's just so perfect and mysterious and in my opinion it describes perfectly how it feels to not have the words to express one's feelings while having them them at the same time... if that makes any sense, lol. It feels to me like noticing all the vague details in daily life and seeing the irony of it all, trying to distract yourself from something you know you simply cannot ignore, it has almost a philosophical quality to it. There are so many things you can say about this song and many quotes you can quote (duh!) that is actually hard to believe... But i think my favourite might be "The ghost of electricity howls in the bones of her face" all those powerful random images that come to my head while listening to this emanate irony and loneliness... a boring night sitting in a dark hotel room doing nothing but staring at a TV that has no signal, while wondering all there is to wonder. A masterpiece, and my all time favourite lyrics from any song ever.

-One Of Us Must Know (Sooner Or Later): It's just a great, personal and emotional song, one of the best songs in the record.

-I Want You: This was actually my favourite song on the record before "Visions Of Johanna", even if it's not anymore, it still is in my top 10 songs of all time. The first time i listened to it, i fell in love and it made me feel in a way that very few songs have. Beautiful, melodic, melancholic and a hell of a catchy song. Dylan at it's very best.

-Just Like A Woman: A song for the ages, Dylan manages to portray an abstract imagery (including anphetamine and pearls) of a woman, whom he knows better than anyone else and might even love. He looks beyond the superficial things and knows she is vulnerable, and just not what she appears to be.

"Sad Eyed Lady Of The Lowlands": Written for her wife at the time, Sara; Dylan gavewhat is in my opinion, the most beautiful gift a lover could ever ask for; everything. This song is eleven minutes long, an eleven minute long love letter to the person whom he loved the most even if you consider how it all ended, i still think you cannot deny how much Dylan loved her.

"And it don't bleed and it don't breathe, it's locked its jaws and now it's swallowing, it's in our heart, its in our heads, it's in our love, baby it's in our bed". That's first chorus from the opening track of Gentlemen, and all in all, i think it sums pretty well the motive, the mood... the feeling of the record.

I didn't know anything about The Afghan Whigs until last year, thanks to one of my best friends, he told me that he think that i would love them, and he was pretty much right, i have listened to almost all of their records since and i have become a fan the band, my first experience with them was with thier 1998 record "1965" which i love and i think it's pretty underrated, but anyway i will talk about that later on the chart. Produced by Greg Dulli himself, Gentlemen was truthly the biggest record the band had ever released (and i think it still is, even if The Afghan Whigs weren't the most popular band out there). There is a lot to say about this record, some of the most honest and brutal lyrics i have ever listened to are in here, every word hurts just like someone trying to slowly burn your heart, there is also some unique piano melodies featured in a lot of the songs trought the record, which might be a surpise for some people, considering this thing came out in the early 90's, where mainstream rock was filled by grunge bands. Dulli himself said that this record is a kind of recollection of stories and feelings, that are not necessarily inspired by him, but rather an interpretation of how a relationship can fall and broke as if they were made of glass; beautiful, fragile, lonely, poetic... and like i said earlier you cannot get more honest than this, in a way i think this is one of the truest forms of love.

Gentlemen kicks off with the already mentioned "If I Were Going" which can be seen as an introduction to the emotional disturbance that will await for us in every single song of the record, the song utilizes metaphors of a monster that doesn't bleed or breathe to tell us about how he feels about his relationship now that nothing is the same; the silence turned into a monster that it's killing him, that guilty feeling... Then in a perfectly made transitional move we can hear the drums playing a sick beat which leads us to the tittle track of the record "Gentlemen", memorable and self-indulgent lyrics such as "understand that i'm a gentlemen" almost like he is forcing you to see him as a "gentlemen", a sexy riff with a sexy solo, what more could you ask for? "Be Sweet" is a song about someone who wants to be loved, and ask women to "be sweet" to him, even if he is an asshole, who just wants to "fuck", the breakdown in the first chorus makes this song even better for me and the "baby, you be sweet, be sweet" part kills me, beautiful track, love it. "When We Two Parted" is a heartbreaking song about a helpless lover who cannot do anything, but to struggle with thier relationship "If it starts to hurt you... then you have to say so" also i love the bass on this one. "Fountain and Fairfax" describes drinking as an exit of all the narrator's problems, the screams in here are simply amazing, Dulli at its best. "What Jail is Like" is one of the greatest songs in the record, the feeling of desesperation and anxiety are written all over this song and the fights are here too "Your image... your definition of a friend" that piano melody is great. lead singer of the band Scrawl, Marcy Mays comes and performs the only song Dulli thought it wasn't meant for him to sing in all The Afghan Whigs repertoire: "My Curse" amazing, beautiful song, love everything about it; the acoustic melody, the solo and the heartbreaking obsession that comes with the lyrics... a personal favourite of mine. one of the heavier songs on the record has to be "Now You Know" which has a piano melody like the the two previous songs "My sweetness, my everything!" great track too. It's an irony both the heaviest and the calmest songs are next to each other in here, but still, "I Keep Coming Back" is one of my favourites songs from the record too, it's a nice and sweet ballad that concludes with everything that has been said already... the narrator needs this woman in his life and he is sorry for making her feel bad. "Brother Woodrow/Closing prayer" it's an instrumental track and my least favourite track from the record, that being said, i still like it, it's an emotional ending to a devastating record.

Favourite Tracks:

If I Were Going: The introduction to one of my favourite records, i love how it sets the mood for every track to come, i love the lyrics and i love the interlude that connects this song to "Gentlemen"

Be Sweet: The story of a vulnerable man trying to keep his apparence cope with his emptiness by sleeping with other people, but still feeling unsatisfied at the end, brilliant.

Debonair: The resentiments in the air are strong with this one, and i love that they re-used the "it don't bleed..." part from "If i Were Going" as if it was some sort of warning of what this song is trying to tell"this ain't about regrets, it's when i tell the truth".

My Curse: Hard not to love this song, there is so much going on, and i'm always absolutely fascinated by the lyrics and how she seems to be on a sort of "magical spell", an almost religious feeling, by someone who she sees herself as an slave to. Beautiful.

I Keep Coming Back: This is obviously a very personal choice, cause i know it's not a fan-favourite, but honestly this song is too much for my heart to handle :( i can't help but feel like im going to melt down whenever this song plays, i find it so honest, and pure that i think it deserves to be here.

Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers had an established name in the world of rock music in the early 80's, with a lot of great record on their sleeve such as their self-titled debut and "Damn The Torpedoes". But being completely honest their fire seemed to be a little low, even if songs like "Don't Come Around Here No More" were successful in the mid 80's. And that's not a surprise considering bands like Jane's Addiction, Red Hot Chili Peppers and even Nirvana were on their way to become the next big thing. Out of nowhere Petty decided to hang out with some of their friends and then they made a little band called "The Traveling Wilburys" that had SOME OF THE MOST BRILLIANT MUSICAL MINDS EVER; George Harrison, Roy Orbison, Jeff Lynne and Bob Dylan and during this process, Petty had the idea of releasing a solo record (which still has the participation of some of the Heartbreakers) produced by Lynne, Petty and Mike Campbell (guitarist of The Heartbreakers) "Full Moon Fever" turned out to be the biggest success of Petty's career.

"Free Fallin'" might be the greatest Tom Petty song, it's a simple 3 chord song that will stay in your head forever, seriously who hasn't scream the chorus of this song from the top of their lungs? This is in my top 10 favourite songs ever, such a classic and enjoyable song. "I Won't Back Down" brings George Harrison at the guitar, he aslo sings in the chorus, and even more, in the video you can even see Ringo Starr as well, even if he doesn't play in the recording it's nice to have 2/4 of The Beatles around, Another catchy song, memorable and epic. "Love Is A Long Road" many people might disagree but, it is my least favourite song out of the record, i know it's still pretty good, i like it, but i could never bear myself to love it. The freightening "A Face In The Crowd" is one song of a kind, very atmospheric, deep and emotionally beautiful track, it amazes me how underrated it is in comparison with other tracks of the record, i love the video of the song too, it is like a nightmare that somehow makes you hopeful for something to happen, but you know it is just a bad dream. Then of course, we have the classic "Running Down A Dream", i swear this song is so simple yet so good that makes you want to drive at full speed by the highway... and i don't even know how to drive! and that guitar solo, my god! is simply perfect, Mike Campbell went full legend on this one, for sure.

Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).

Just here for the descriptions. Your music preference is your own. The justification is what makes the list great. Keep it up.

Always happy to see LCD up on top. Surprised to not see any Arcade Fire / Sigur Ros / War on Drugs. Feel like they'd tie-in well with your other albums on here. Cheers.
