Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. Absolutely ADORE so many of these great picks, many of which appear on my own chart. That said, I feel like the focus on so many 90s & 00s indie classics the pre-90s has been short changed a little - if you're after older records that don't feel so dated you may like a few of these krautrock beauts:
Tangerine Dream - Zeit
Can - Ege Bamyasi
Faust - Faust IV
Amon Düül II - Yeti

(Didn't like your nr 1 ('Hospice' at the time of writing) on first listen, but maybe it will be a grower for me..)
