Do it! Now that Naples is gone, I'm the one and only guy whose favorite band ever is The Kinks. I can't recommend them more. They have four essential albums, starting with Face To Face until Arthur. Before, they were OK, if not groundbreaking, and after they slowly got boring. But these four albums are my favorite pop albums from the 60's (except Forever Changes obviously).
Also, Ten Years After is an excellent blues-rock band. Their album Ssssh in particular is really exceptionnal. Creedence Clearwater Revival's three albums from 69 are gold, too. And finally, Love's first two albums are IMO really worth it. While not as strong as Forever Changes, they are among my favorite psych records from that era (I like them both more than Surrealistic Pillow, for example). It may be my fanboyism, though.
Anyway, good luck, and don't hesitate to share your discoveries with me, as I'm not really a 60's expert either and would be glad to discover new things from that era ;-)

I haven't gotten my hands on any Kinks albums, and as such I haven't listened to them. It's on my to-do list though.
