Top 49 Greatest Music Albums by tin_etc
Yes, I know I'm very MTV generation. And yes, I know some of these choices might seem suspect especially how I cheated by just putting a lot of "greatest hits" albums in (but I think its fair since I was not born at the time and did not suffer with anticipation for the release of those albums). At this time in my life, I won't be pretentious and rate music by its historical significance; I rate music by distinguishing which album I will play if I am shitfaced drunk or other forms of inebriated. Also some of these albums are on here due to its impact on me growing up in a diverse socioeconomic suburban shitfest. I was born in the late 80's and I know I have yet had a chance to listen to a lot of great albums so feel free to suggest any album. Also, it is likely I'm forgetting some albums at this moment. I'm sure I will be updating this sporadically as time progresses and I am exposed to more and more music. Cheers.-4/16/09
Okay, I decided no Greatest Hits album should be on this chart anymore because its just plain ridunkulous. -4/23/09
Been listening to some new stuff while puffing green into this new summer air. Changed my mind about some albums and added others. It is great and life is too. -6/17/09 I really recommend Veckatimest by Grizzly Bear. It gets better with every listen. At the end of track 3, theres a haunting outro that goes "i can't get out of what i'm into with you" that, to me, is great songwriting. I definitely had to express this.-6/19/09 I haven't been on here in a while but I just updated some albums. I really enjoy Animal Collective. I like the modern surrealism style of writing that they have. I think it goes very well with the music and the messages. The looping frequencies are mapping out an environment and the band uses simple lyrics to explain complicated situations. The lyrics to "taste" and "what would you want? sky" are really good examples of how flexible this type of writing can be. Im currently on vacation in snowy mountains of colorado. I'm smoking the green I snuck in my crotch that I'm lucky to dodge backscatter machines with. I'm listening to albums. Kid A was my #1 but I think now, the feelings that that album emotes is no longer something I want to dwell on. Life is good. -1/8/10 A lot has changed in a year. I am starting to rate albums differently. After punishing my liver and possibly colon and ruining many friendships (in the year that I will chronicle in my life as "The Celebration"), I have unsurprisingly burnt out on drinking. Therefore, my old tried and true method of getting shitfaced, driving across Texas, and rating frequencies with a scatterbrain will come to an end.I am now rating albums by these criteria: consistency of overall album, best song on album, lasting appeal, feel/time/place aka nostalgia, and vs. mode against other albums. Imma spend some time writing reviews of as many albums as I can so I can return and read it. Half-assed chronicling of my music taste has actually been rewarding and given me a good introspection of my life this time last year. Thank you besteveralbums.com for this free mild form of therapy and possibly curing my alcoholism. It is also funny to see that the first time I posted I mentioned that I was very MTV generation. Now when I put MTV on or any television really, I get very alienated and weirded out. Reminds me of that Grandpa Simpsons Quote: ""I used to be with it, but then they changed what it was. Now what I'm with isn't it, and what's it seems weird and scary to me, and it'll happen to you, too." Haha true story. -5/6/10

Rating metrics:
Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some charts can have several thousand ratings)
This chart has a Bayesian average rating of 81.9/100, a mean average of 81.3/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 80.8/100. The standard deviation for this chart is 12.0.

One of my favorites. I like how you didn't include many multiple albums of the same band. Great job!
Nice selection, plus you made my day quoting Abe Simpson
great choices!
Lil' Wayne is basically inexcusable in any context, but I dig it otherwise.
mad props as being the only other guy on here with fall be kind on his chart
great chart ! but Discovery better than homework .... mmmm don't think so
I like it.
cool list- good to see MPP at #5
First two pages, feel almost identical to mine, brilliant. 'Kid A' is my favorite as well. Just brilliant.
Brilliant chart: many albums I got on mine...
you can freely pick some music from it as a recommendation...
If you like Hail To The Thief I especially suggest The Eraser (Radiohead's Thom Yorke solo release) and The Eraser RMXS (particularly: Burial's, Modeselektor's, Surgeon's and Bug's).
