Top 100 Greatest Music Albums by Torchlin

16 September 2019
-new revamp-
After a few years of inactivity, I decided to give it another go to rank my current favorite albums.
Although I'm open for all different kinds of music genres, I have a penchant for electronic music and hip hop, thus this will be reflected in my album choices.
I plan to add a comment for each album but obviously, it will take time.

There are 35 comments for this chart from BestEverAlbums.com members and Top 100 Greatest Music Albums has an average rating of 89 out of 100 (from 59 votes). Please log in or register to leave a comment or assign a rating.

This is so insane!

There's something only a few albums manage to pull it off, you know what I mean? I'm talking about music that makes you completely forget your surroundings. Music that transports you to a different place, a different world.
Tokyo station,
the sound of pedestrians hastily going their own ways,
the complete feeling of depersonalization,
the emotional distance between individuals...
Your body gets sucked in by the music, the dub techno beats feel unnerving, almost suffocating..
Welcome to Liumin!

"Liumin Reduced", the second part of the album is strictly ambient, painting an even more melancholic and isolated landscape. While remarkable on it's own right, it's definitely the one I listen less to.

One of the most amusing stories regarding this album is when the Rolling Stone magazine who are mostly knows for their love for 60s and 70s rock music decided to put a "EDM" list together and surprise, they put this relatively unknown album among well known figures including at the time mainstream celebrities in the scene like Skrillex and Deadmou5. I can almost imagine their thought process: "Hmm, this Immer record seemed to be quite important for the minimal scene in Gernany, better put it on the list somewhere"

Like Liumin, it's a record that takes you on a journey but instead of presenting a heavy, almost suffocating atmosphere, it's surpassingly playful and liberating. Nevertheless, it's not a warm record by any means.
From the glitchy electronics of the first track "Tomorrow Goodbye" till the bombastic finale, no second is wasted, every beat is in its right place. You can feel how carefully selected Mayer's choices were for this mixCD to create the best listening experience.
A timeless classic!

Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some charts can have several thousand ratings)

This chart is rated in the top 4% of all charts on BestEverAlbums.com. This chart has a Bayesian average rating of 89.1/100, a mean average of 89.6/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 89.6/100. The standard deviation for this chart is 10.6.

Dang. This chart is about as legit as they come. Every pick keeps me on my toes and they're pretty much all great. Some stuff I never heard of, too.

I know like 10 albums here overall... Will come back and rate it again when I listen to some of these albums, really got me interested. Loads of electronica, then death metal (?), some classic rock albums, some weird albums and many unknowns.

Awesome list! Many original picks. I admit there are a few I have not heard yet so I rated you high based simply on originality. Also, what's up with the guy who said "top marks for originality" and then gave you 70/100? What an idiot.
