Folk, Singer-Songwriter

*Originally written on AOTY and my personal Instagram account*

I've spent the last couple of months really considering what's so appealing to me about art -- and music especially. At some point, this day-in and day-out cycle of listening one album to the next gets exhausting. What am I supposed to be looking for exactly? What exactly is my standard? What's appealing to me? What are the opinions of others and how do they line up with my beliefs? Its these questions I asked as I then preceded to sterilize my experiences with art.

So, I took a step back, and let my concious play whatever I felt was needed in the moment. My discovery isn't an unpopular one. Why do I gravitate toward music so feverishly? Catharsis. I want to feel heard and seen, even in moments where I cover up and hide. In a way, artists, and musicians especially, offer us a subsidy. Something to project our own trials and disparities onto without ever considering the delicate minds behind it. It's brave really, given how the only thing we offer musicians in return is our criticism over their personal turmoil and constructive thought; of which we may never truly understand the plight of.

But I can't help but wonder if that criticism is inexplicably directed towards ourselves. Maybe I only speak for myself here, but I find it's harder to write positively as opposed to negatively. If it's catharsis I'm seeking, and if I see myself in someone else's recording, what can I say that's positive and informative on the album, but direct, consice, and degrading about how I'm feeling? In regards to myself, thats an issue with my person that I'd rather not elaborate on extensively. With that said, I've been in a state of crisis for quite some time now. The peril has long since passed, but I'm afraid it's going to come back from behind me and pull me under into a deafening, black abyss. I have a clean slate, and the future looks bright, but I'm also starving for commiseration, touch, comradery, solidarity and spiritual clarity. Only to then fluctuate and overwhelm myself when an opportunity seemingly arises. Like a mirage in the distance, surely it must be too good to be true.

These issues (or the drought of these issues...I should say) are isolating by nature. It sets the precipice for something, anything, to waltz into your life and chill you to the very core of your soul. Suddenly, you aren't as alone as you thought. Suddenly, you know that, someone out there, must have shared your pain. Your isolation. Your deprivation.

With all this rambling aside, a question remains. What is Strange Cacti exactly when I take myself out of the equation and look at everything I just said for what it is and for what its worth?

Well, it's a musical experience that tears emotional stability asunder. Where panic and emotions of colossal proportions take helm as it's creative mind begins to swirl the drain. It's dark, cold, raw, bare, visceral, direct, reflective, dynamic, and finally; perfect in all of it's fragility.

Very nice and personal little chart. I can't wait to see you add more! There's several albums on here I was really into a few years ago. "Scenery" is perfect calming and reflective casual jazz. Nujabes is my favorite hip hop producer for sure. Also a great number one choice! I included My Woman from Angel Olsen on my chart since Strange Cacti isn't a full length album, but if I was considering it amongst the others it is probably my favorite project of hers. For me it's very soothing and great for listening to late at night when half asleep and trying to relieve stress and become unconscious.

If you like Angel Olsen and have not heard of Julia Jacklin I highly recommend you check her stuff out. She has a similar voice and emotional delivery, but definitely has a memorable and unique songwriting approach. Also if you like Fiona Apple then you should Check out Madison Cunningham. She is one of my new favorite artists and incorporates a lot of different styles, making really soulful and expressive tunes.
