An irrational totally subjective favourite. Lashings of dreamy melodic pop to keep you warm forever. I love THE SOUND of this monster. I've bought this four times so far, and may have to get a fifth copy now the deluxe box set thing with every last parp and whistle has been released. [First added to this chart: 07/01/2014]

Does this classify a a "Great Lost Album"? Seems to be very overlooked, both here on BEA and in music history. It" compulsive listening, has really great songs, sounds like a great Southern California band at the end of it's tether. I seem to remember reading it was made as the "Manson Family" stalked the Hollywood hills around which it was being recorded. OK, so this guy never really recorded a note of decent music again, but this was a grand swan song. If you listen to this I don't think you'll easily forget it And the cover seemed very desirable to Bob Dylan for some reason. [First added to this chart: 03/18/2015]

The second greatest Steely Dan album of the 1970's, and the other great muso album of 1976, another demonstration of brilliantly lucid musical perfectionism. [First added to this chart: 07/01/2014]

The great muso album of 1976! Some of the best playing on any album ever, and my chart doesn't have nearly enough ROCK on it. Visceral and punchy. The drums sound amazing. [First added to this chart: 07/01/2014]

Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some charts can have several thousand ratings)

This chart has a Bayesian average rating of 84.6/100, a mean average of 82.5/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 84.4/100. The standard deviation for this chart is 15.5.

On a revisit: Personally, I don't like having compilations in my list, but you do you. !!!!!!!!!!STEVE /FUCKING/ MCQUEEN!!!!!!! is such an awesome album. I agree that it does totally encapsulate everything that was awesome about the 80s.

Totally agree with your description of The Nightfly. Personal nostalgia matching the theme of nostagia of the album

Fine chart. Got a little too much disco for my taste, but some excellence in there too. Plus I really like your little descriptions, that makes the chart more interesting. :)

Good chart, I enjoyed reading the comments, nice to see someone else who appreciates Radiohead's TKOL remix album, albeit it is not on my all-time chart but in my 2010s chart. I must admit that Reeling In The Years aside I have never heard any Steely Dan. I will have to listen to Aja and their greatest hits. Ditto Donald Fagen. Education of musical tastes is what this is all about for me. Enjoyed this chart, its eclectic and fun and I like how you placed The Eagles next to The Dead Kennedys. Cool stuff.

An interesting chart with a lot of personality. Steely Dan's Aja was buried deep in my playlist... thanks for the nudge ;)

Beautiful list. Personal but with arguments for nearly each choice. Funny how the german Steely Dan fans of our generation say "Gaucho" as the british say "Aja". I found the 80s quite interesting, but yes, I remember well too, when "Swoon" and "Steve McQueen" came out and how their beauty unfolded slowly. A friend of mine liked David Ackles a lot, maybe Steve Young would be a good companion or David Blue oder Mac Gayden but you might have them on your list already.

Interesting list. Many good classic 70s, Bowie and Fagen but also some personal newer favorites like Sufjan, Josh Rouse, Pnau. AND Eg and Alice! I've been looking for that album for a while now....
