Top 100 Greatest Music Albums
by DrewHamster

2025 Edit. I'm going to be honest. I have mental issues to the point where it is not even funny. I've edited this list a ridiculous amount of times. I hope I'm finally bringing things full circle and listing the 100 albums I think are the best. These are the albums that have had the most impact on me.

I am in the process of getting the order straight.

Recommendations are welcome!

Rating metrics: Help Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some charts can have several thousand ratings)

This chart has a Bayesian average rating of 74.0/100, a mean average of 71.9/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 72.3/100. The standard deviation for this chart is 23.2.

Last update I replaced half the of the chart. I have Three Cheers on Vinyl, but I've never listened to any of the three you listed all that consistently. I didn't actually get into PTV until their newest album so naturally I prefer it. I tried to get this back to what I actually personally like and listen to the most.

Removing Clarity (JEW) Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge, and Collide With the Sky (widely considered the best PTV album) to replace them with Panic! doesn't seem like a good idea to me...

nice chart. Some excellent picks and some that I’m not so enamoured with but that’s cool, we all have different tastes and you’re not following the herd.

You've got an interesting take that I respect on emo and pop punk. I especially like Brand New and The Art of Drowning-era AFI. I like Folie a Deux, I like what I've heard of The Used (The Bird And The Worm is a great song), can't say I agree on some takes though: Imagine Dragons, Decemberunderground, and 2010's Fall Out Boy is not it for me, but to each their own.

I want to share some personal favourites I think you'd really enjoy:
The Matches - Decomposer
Silverchair - Diorama
System of a Down - Toxicity
The Arrogant Sons of Bitches - Three Cheers for Disappointment
Līve - Throwing Copper
Glass Beach - Plastic Death
Panic! At The Disco - A Fever You Can't Sweat Out (The first album I ever fell in love with back in middle school 2005, still a classic)

Appreciate inclusion of Slipknot's debut, great album.

I've saved Glassjaw - Worship and Tribute, really want to check that out. I keep seeing Circa Survive around, really want to hear them too.

I'll bet you're as alternative/LGBT as me and all my friends haha (just a guess, I live with my boyfriend of 4 years, nice to see some culture that feels close to home)

A lot of albums of your adolescence I think. It's funny! I dont like Bring Me The Horizon, Disturbed and Fall Out Boy but I respect your opinion and I find it cool to assume his musical tastes. Kid A is Radiohead's Best and a very great album.

Over 1/4 of your selections (from only 4 artists!!!) are less than favorites of mine... With that being said, I liked a lot of your other choices (Radiohead, Brand New, Pink Floyd)

It is very interesting how you seem to understand and enjoy complex/detail-oriented music without getting bored by more simplistic/mainstream albums. After understanding Kid A, most straightforward guitar-rock albums left me uninspired.
