While Time magazine branded Cliburn "the Texan who conquered Russi", Cliburn was really the pianist who helped bridge relations between two fundamentally opposed countries through the power of classical music
Before he was pioneering spiritual jazz and free jazz, Coltrane wrote some of the best jazz standards of the 1950s.

"Toshiko is almost painfully self-critical of her performances, but she felt - at least as of the day of the session - that this is the best of her albums so far." - Nat Hentoff, 1957 (from the liner notes)
“Dorothy Ashby is a jazz musician too. Don’t let the harp (the word) lead you to believe otherwise… Do let the harp (the instrument) capture your ears as Dorothy takes her swinging, guitar-like lines and joins them to the conventional effects of this ancient ‘axe’.” - Ira Gitler, 1958 (from the liner notes)
"Neal Hefti has matched - figure for figure, note for note-blower - his talent to the Basie band’s, and it comes out, as it should, Basie.” - Barry Ulanov, 1958 (from the liner notes)

“It was on the train, with its steely rhythms, its rattle-ty bang, that is so often so stimulating to a composer.... I frequently hear music in the very heart of the noise. And there I suddenly heard - and even saw on paper - the complete construction of the rhapsody, from beginning to end.” - George Gershwin to biographer Isaac Goldberg, 1931
“Certainly this is not the blue[s] of a man born in New Orleans and raised among social conditions of Jim Crow squalor and poverty, musical conditions of two or three primitive chord changes; this is the blues of a man who has lived a little; who has seen the more sophisticated sides of like in midwestern and eastern cities, who adds to what he has known of hardship and discrimination the academic values that came with mind-broadening experience, in music schools and big bands and combos, in St. Louis and New York and Paris and Stockholm. This is the new, the deeper and broader blues of today” - Leonard Feather, 1958 (from the liner notes)

“It is this constant searching and trying to improve on what he [Sonny Rollins] has done which has brought about so many of the advances he has made and kept him a dynamic musician.” - Ira Gitler, 1956 (from the liner notes)
